The Kite Runner post 2

" I had one last chance to make a decision. One final opportunity to decide who I was going to be. I could step into that alley, stand up for Hassan - the way he'd stood up for me all those times in the past - and accept whatever would happen to me. Or I could run. In the end I ran." (77)

I couldn't believe that Amir abandoned Hassan after all their years together. They even fed from the same breast. Amir was just intimidated by Assef and his two henchmen. Assef is like Hitler (not a surprise since he is half German). Hitler always intimidated people into giving in to his demands. Look at what happened to all those Jews. Assef said that Hassan was a lowly Hazara who couldn't read a single word. Given the taunting Amir was ashamed of Hassan because he was the son of Baba's servent. Maybe Amir wanted to impress Baba. After all Amir was the one who killed Baba's beloved wife when she died giving birth to him. Baba didn't like the fact that Amir didn't end up being like him because his wife died. Baba likes soccer and Amir likes reading. Baba wants Amir to run his business when he is older but Amir wants to be a writer. The source of conflict between Amir and Baba is a central part of The Kite Runner because even though they have little in common they are father and son. Amir seems to think that Baba loves Hassan better than him. That is not true. Hassan's father Ali came to Baba's family after two men ran over Ali's parents when he was five years old. Amir's grandfather was the judge in the trial and sencenced the men to join the army for two years, even though the two men were exempt from the draft. I can see why Baba was upset when Ali and Hassan left because Ali had been with his family for forty years. A person can do bad things in order to impress someone.
